Map who is affected
before you count the cost
When a country bans imports made with forced labour, the effects do not stop at the border. This framework follows them outward: to importers and customers; to lenders, insurers and investors; to the board and regulators; and to workers and the people who represent them. For each group, it shows how the issue reaches them, when they act, what they ask, and who they pass the issue on to. It describes consequences, not costs. Step 2 puts a cost on them.
The map is generic. It does not describe any real company. It is based on how forced labour import bans have played out in practice, and every data point cited has a linked, publicly available source.
Use it for your own case. Open each group, read how the issue would reach them, and rate how hard it would hit your company. The map changes colour as you go, and your notes are included when you download your case. The map runs in your browser. Nothing you enter leaves your computer or is saved, so download or print your case before you close the page.
Your case
Select any group to see who passes the issue to it, and who it passes the issue on to. On a small screen, scroll the map sideways or switch to “Over time”.
Step 2 · Estimate the cost
Put numbers on the groups you rated High
The exposure calculator estimates what you would owe workers, how long it may take to get the order lifted, the profit lost while goods are held, and the added costs from customers, lenders, insurers and investors. It then compares all of this with the cost of fixing the problems first.
